Description
The Exploration and Environmental Geophysics Group (EEG) at the Institute of Geophysics is offering

PhD position in geophysical modeling and imaging of geothermal systems / PhD positions in computational seismology and full waveform inversion

The position on characterizing geothermal systems with geophysical methods will be part of a synergistic and integrative project with collaborators working on thermo-physical hydrological modeling of high enthalpy systems, geochemical reactive transport modeling of fluid rock interactions and quantitative dynamics of active geothermal systems in Iceland. The geophysical modeling and imaging will be mainly focused on seismic and electromagnetic techniques and informed by the other sub-projects. We would like to fill this position as soon as possible.

For the two other positions we are looking for candidates with a strong interest in signal processing, computational seismology, laboratory seismic scale modeling and the physics of wave propagation. The primary driver is to develop improved methods for 3D simulation of elastic wave propagation and full waveform inversion of multi-component seismic data.

The successful candidates should hold a Master’s degree in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, computer science or similar fields, and should have a keen interest and preferably some experience in computational methods for geophysical applications.

For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Stewart Greenhalgh, email: gstewart@aug.ig.erdw.ethz.ch  (no applications). We can offer a dynamic workplace with access to excellent computational facilities, a broad range of state-of-the-art geophysical equipment and data. In addition, our group owns dedicated HPC hardware, which will be significantly expanded in the near future. The EEG group at ETH Zurich is embedded in a vibrant Earth Science department, which will offer many opportunities for co-operative projects.

We are looking forward to your online application. Interested candidates should state in their letter of application which position they wish to be considered for along with their Curriculum Vitae and the names and addresses of three referees. Please address it to: ETH Zürich, Frau Maja Bügler, Human Resources, CH-8092, Zürich, by September 30, 2012.
