College of Science and Engineering

We are seeking a highly motivated bioinformatics or evolutionary genetics post-doc to work with Darren Obbard, Peter Keightley and Susan Johnston at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Edinburgh. This project, funded by the BBSRC, will estimate de novo mutation rates for multiple species of Drosophila, and integrate this analysis with other population-genetic parameters in a phylogenetic context. This post will involve the development and implementation of bioinformatics pipelines, and the evolutionary analysis of population-genomic data from multiple species.

Applicants should have (or be near completion of) a PhD in bioinformatics, evolutionary genomics, population genetics, or a closely related field. A successful candidate is likely to have experience with sequence-based bioinformatics (e.g. genome assembly, annotation and/or resequencing data), including a good knowledge of relevant scripting languages (e.g. Python and/or R, Bash, Snakemake) and software (e.g. read-mappers, genome-assemblers, variant-callers). The candidate should have an excellent academic track record (commensurate with their career stage and experience), ideally including peer-reviewed published work. They are expected to be active in developing the project, to collaborate with all team members, and to contribute to an enthusiastic working atmosphere. The candidate will benefit from training in the vibrant intellectual and collaborative environment provided be the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, Edinburgh.

This full time role is expected to commence as soon as possible from August 2020 and is fixed term until 31st May 2023.

Closing date is 14th July 2020 at 5pm GMT.
