Fixed Term
Salary £27,318 to £28,972 per annum (pro-rata if part time) together with USS pension benefits, if required. This is a fixed term position to 30th April 2015.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant position to study the dynamics of gas invasion in deformable porous media. You will work on a multi-disciplinary project funded by EPSRC, and join the Complex Flow research group at the Soft Matter/Systems and Process Engineering Centre at Swansea University.
The aim of the project is to understand the physical mechanisms that control fracture growth in experiments where a gas is injected into a wet granular/porous medium. Specifically we aim to understand the role of capillary forces and wetting properties in shaping the fracture patterns. Further, carbon dioxide will be used as fracturing fluid, and we will focus on the complex interplay between the evolving fracture pattern and the migration of carbon dioxide in the medium. Outputs from this study will inform future unconventional hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and Carbon Capture and Storage technologies.
The project involves setting up finely controlled lab experiments, performing image analysis, and developing underpinning theory for the observed physical behaviour of the system. You will work closely with people in the research group, and will have the opportunity to work with collaborating researchers at the University of Strasbourg and University of Oslo.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and capable individual that will be able to hit the ground running in the lab. You should have a PhD in physics, engineering or related fields. Prior experience in experimental work on soft/granular matter, complex flow, fluid mechanics, pattern formation or similar area is desirable.
