The US Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) is seeking a post-doctoral scientist interested in joining our cutting-edge team in the state-of-the-art Host Genetics Section of the Department of Molecular Virology and Pathogenesis at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research located in the Washington DC area. The position will focus on understanding how human genetic variation contributes to differences in infectious disease susceptibility and pathogenesis. The incumbent will work on bioinformatic analyses of next generation sequencing technologies to identify host genetic variants that correlate with HIV resistance, AIDS progression and vaccine efficacy in cohorts of African and Asian ancestry.

Tasks: Toward the identification of significant host genetic variants the candidate will a) implement workflows for whole-exome and whole-genome sequence data, b) perform whole genome/exome experiments, c) pursue bioinformatics analyses in collaboration with our research group and various clinicians within MHRP, and d) develop new methods and approaches for the analysis of whole genome sequence data. The workflow will include methods for quality control, alignment of sequences, identification of sequence variants, and annotation. The candidate will perform other project-specific laboratory-based research as needed, and will be expected to author scientific publications based on research findings.

Requirements: We are seeking an enthusiastic communicative team player with a PhD in genomics, bioinformatics, or a relevant scientific discipline with a strong background in bioinformatics. Experience with the analytical tools of next generation sequencing, strong programming skills (e.g., Perl, Python, Java), shell scripting and knowledge of Unix/Linux is necessary. The candidate should have the ability to make a high-throughput pipeline for sequencing and analyses of NGS data and to integrate it with the in-house database. The candidate should have excellent writing and communication skills.

Desirable: Experience with laboratory-based molecular biology techniques is desirable. Applicants with 0-2 years of postdoctoral experience are encouraged to apply.
