OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Computational design and optimisation in collaboration with MEMS R&D Engineering Sector, Dublin, Ireland

DESCRIPTION:

The Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) at the University of Limerick is recruiting a Postdoctoral Applied Mathematician/Engineer to work in collaboration with Memjet, a printing technology and components company. The successful candidate will be based full time in the Memjet Dublin office and will have direct access and knowledge transfer with the mathematics team at the University of Limerick.
The successful candidate will be involved in the intensive design optimisation, theoretical design, and simulation, for the characterisation and development of Memjet’s printing technology products. We are looking for a highly motivated self starter, who can work independently as well as in a team environment. The successful candidate will be working within the engineering design theory and simulation department. The position requires the candidate to work on everyday practical industrial problems.

Specifics of the Role
The role demands the intensive design optimisation and modelling of microscale electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), which is a unique engineering discipline. The problem requires the analysis of MEMS scale cantilever droplet ejectors operating in a transient dynamic environment within very small timescales.
In simulation terms the problem is a multiphysics domain type analysis, involving thermal-electrical and mechanical structural analysis heavily coupled to fluid dynamics and fluid flow behaviour. MEMS scale Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is the interaction of some movable or deformable structure with a surrounding fluid flow or boundary.
Fluid-structure interaction problems, especially those with transient dynamic oscillatory behaviour, are classed as multiphysics problems and in general are very complex and time consuming to solve or simulate using commercial engineering software. This is due to the number of design parameters that have to be considered, and the complex mathematical equations which have to be solved using the finite element methods (FEM) and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approaches.
At small length scales, the design of actuators must consider the effects of several physical phenomena. MEMS devices utilize multiphysics phenomena for its very function and or for increased sensitivity.
The research carried out within the design department at Memjet considers the fields of microscale computational fluid dynamics and computational structural dynamics. The maturity of these fields enables numerical simulation of fluid-structure interaction problems using commercial simulation computer code and in-house techniques.
The candidate will be required to firstly understand the full nature of the multiphysics problems, then write/design, test and verify a bespoke computer-based optimiser (written in-house by the candidate in Python, C++, or similar). This optimiser will have to consider a very large number of design variables and must run in a quick and efficient manner on standard or varied operating computer platforms. Timely turnarounds of design problems are crucial, so the optimiser must run quickly and efficiently.

Responsibilities include
• Fully understanding the complete nature of the MEMS scale multiphysics problems.
• Verifying and presenting the mathematics behind MEMS scale multiphysics, the problem and or approaches/techniques.
• Writing an in-house computer based optimiser that considers a very large number of design variables.
• Fully testing and verifying this computer based program.
• Ensuring this optimiser runs in a quick and efficient manner on standard or varied operating computer platforms.
• Ensuring this optimiser runs seamlessly with current commercial engineering FEM and CFD design code.

Essential
• PhD in Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, or related discipline.
• Excellent applied mathematical and computer-coding skills.
• Knowledge of either structural engineering science or fluid mechanics.
• Strong documentation skills and ability to communicate results effectively to a multi-disciplinary audience.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
Desirable
• Relevant postdoctoral research experience or industry-linked experience.
• Experience of MEMS scale design.
• Knowledge of FEA or CFD.
• Parallel or cloud computing knowledge.
