A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Physics, University of Warwick, under the supervision of Dr David Quigley.

You will join the molecular simulation group at Warwick to develop models of 2D film growth on metal substrates, directed toward understanding and optimising the growth of graphene and boron nitride monolayers via non-classical mechanisms. The research will be undertaken in close collaboration with Dr Neil Wilson (microscopy) and Dr Gavin Bell (surface physics) who will provide experimental input to the project.

You will parameterise and construct a Kinetic Monte-Carlo (KMC) model of 2D film growth from ab initio data and/or simulations using accurate semi-empirical potentials. You will identify the rate limiting processes in the diffusion and aggregation of relevant atoms and clusters on metal surfaces, and characterise their energetics. The resulting model will be used to generate statistics on growth rates, island morphologies and grain sizes, which can be compared directly to experimental data. The research will involve some code development, and the use of existing packages in a high performance computing environment.

You will be expected to play an active role within the theoretical physics group and within the cross-department interdisciplinary atomic/molecular simulation group at Warwick, attending seminars, assisting with supervision of graduate students and organising research events and visits. Regular meetings will be held with experimental project partners.

You will have experience in studying the structure and dynamics of solid-state systems using atomistic and/or ab initio simulation methods. Experience with methods for locating and characterising transition states is desirable, as is familiarity with testing and validation of semi-empirical atomistic potentials. Prior experience of KMC or adaptive KMC simulation methods is highly desirable.

You must be capable of working within a broader research team, demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills, and maintaining a current knowledge of the simulation literature. The ability to communicate research to an interdisciplinary audience will also be required.
