Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed-term 12 month contract position as a Research Assistant with the School of Engineering, School of Natural Sciences, and School of Medicine National University of Ireland, Galway. The Research Assistant will be joining a highly dynamic, multicultural research cluster performing leading edge research on environmental protection, development of new technologies and public health. The research team, affiliated with the Ryan Institute of Environment, Marine and Energy, has strong collaboration with leading industry and academic institutions across Europe and around the world. We perform research in specific areas including:
•Water and wastewater treatment
•Anaerobic reactors
•Development of novel, sustainable environmental technologies
•Environment and health
•Antimicrobial resistance
•Food and water borne infection
•Biofilms and microbial ecology

The domain-specific goal of the project is to investigate the efficiency of various disinfection technologies in removing pathogenic viruses, such as the norovirus from water and wastewaters. The work will comprise both laboratory and on-site aspects. The project will be carried out in collaboration with various partners including Athlone Institute of Technology, the Marine Institute and the EPA

Our research group (www.iruse.ie) is currently comprised of 1 principal investigator and 1 post-doctoral researchers and 6 PhD candidates, 1 research assistant and growing. The research assistant will be based at NUI Galway. We are located in the New Engineering Building (NEB), Microbiology Laboratories and Clinical Science Institute (NUI Galway).
Job Description
•Develop state of the knowledge report on current trends regarding human pathogenic viruses in water and wastewater and their removal.
•Carry out disinfection trials at laboratory scale and at the NUI Galway, Water Research Facility.
•Determine the levels of various HPV such as the norovirus and FRNA bacteriophage pre and post disinfection
•Carry out laboratory analyses of water and wastewater samples
•Disseminate through journal papers, outreach work and reports the outcomes of the research.

Essential Skills:
•A degree in microbiology, bacteriology or related discipline is required.
•A relevant track record in microbial analysis and ability to work both in the laboratory and on-site
•Familiarity with both DNA and RNA based techniques such as qPCR and RT-PCR.
•Excellent laboratory skills
•Exceptional communication skills, demonstrated commitment to deliver and publish results, adaptability and the ability to work in a team environment.
•The candidate should expect to carry out work in both laboratory and on-site conditions
•The candidate should have a full clean drivers licence
