Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for two contract positions as Postdoctoral Researchers with the Schools of Psychology (1 post) and Economics (1 post) at NUI Galway, in conjunction with Centre for Pain Research. The positions are fixed term full-time posts, to start in 2012.

Funded under the Health Research Board Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement Programme, the successful applicants will work on several projects in the area of chronic pain (Chronic Pain in Ireland: Population prevalence, clinical management and professional education). The award has a number of features including its aim of developing top independent researchers from a variety of disciplines. These posts provide the opportunity to work within a small team of researchers from a number of disciplines and a core feature of the award is the opportunity to undertake a personal training and development plan. The projects will involve (a) a study of the prevalence, impact and cost of chronic pain in children (b) development and evaluation of an online psychological treatment for chronic pain © evaluation of the effects of providing feedback to GPs about their clinical judgments regarding the management of chronic pain.

The Economics post-holder will be mentored by Professor Ciaran O’Neill, Professor of Health Technology Assessment while the Psychology post-holder will be mentored by the Lead Investigator for this HRB award, Dr. Brian McGuire, Director of Clinical Psychology and Co-Director of Centre for Pain Research.

Applicants may be newly qualified or more experienced postdoctoral fellows.

Psychology Post:
Essential requirements are:
PhD in Psychology with a clinical or health focus or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
Strong skills in quantitative data analysis.
Experience of conducting clinical/health research.
Evidence of capacity for independent research at a high level.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Desirable requirements:
Experience of working with people with chronic pain.
Experience in evaluating clinical interventions.
Evidence of having published in peer reviewed health journals.

Economics Post:
Essential requirements are:
PhD in Economics.
Strong quantitative skills in general and in econometric methods in particular.
Evidence of capacity for independent research at a high level.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

Desirable requirements:
Experience in the conduct of economic evaluation in the area of healthcare
Training in health economics including decision modeling
Evidence of having published in peer reviewed health or economics journal
