You will investigate why the important fungal pathogen of humans, Candida albicans, has thousands of ORFs in which highly mutable tandem DNA repeats encode amino acid repeats (TR-ORFS) by (i) sequencing and genotyping of repeat regions of select TR-ORFs in patient samples to elucidate their role in long-term and short-term adaptation from allele distributions, (ii) monitoring the mutation of artificial repeat sequences under scenarios in which mutability is rewarded or penalized and (iii) using these results (in collaboration with bioinformaticians and programmers) develop methods for genome-wide in silico predictions of biological roles of repeats in TR-ORFs based on their sequence characteristics. TR-ORFs are not unique to C. albicans and we may expand this work to include other fungi, especially Epichloë endophytes (another area of interest of our lab).

You will also assist other areas of research in the lab, for example by providing advice to postgraduate students.

We are looking for a smart, enthusiastic, reliable, efficient and creative researcher with strong molecular microbiology skills. Familiarity with the biology of Candida albicans and Epichloë would be an advantage, as well as experience in bioinformatics, high-throughout sequencing and proteomics.
