The Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN) (www.crann.tcd.ie), Irelands’ flagship nanoscience centre with 4000 m2 of ultra-modern clean room and laboratory space and state-of-the-art material processing facilities, has a postdoctoral position available in the following area:
The TCD Nanoscience Centre has full lithographic capabilities (including e-beam, focussed ion beam processing and sub-nm He ion microscopy), scanning probe systems (including cryogenic and variable temperature STMs, an entire suite of AFM capabilities, including closed-loop manipulation), deposition, chemical synthesis and processing facilities.
This research project involves cryogenic UHV STM and AFM studies using a new state of the art scanning probe system with superior spatial and force resolution. The project involves the development of new spectroscopic techniques to characterise and controllably manipulate molecules and nanoscale structures on surfaces. The ultimate goal is to create and study the properties of addressable nanostructures for beyond CMOS device applications, and for which prototypes will be fabricated using combinations of conventional and e-beam lithography.
The successful candidate will build on a strong experimental program emphasizing the application of scanning probe methods to nanoscale materials processing and device fabrication. We seek motivated individuals with well-developed analytical and technical skills who seek an opportunity to make a substantial scientific contribution. The successful candidate must have experience in operating and maintaining UHV based systems. A Ph.D. in physics, chemistry or a closely related area of materials science or electrical engineering is also required.
