Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Associate on a project concerning development of embodied conversational agents (ECA) in the context of social signal processing. The project will develop lifelike talking avatars that are capable of displaying a variety of social stances based on statistical and generative models. The project is part of a European Network of Excellence, SSPNet: Social Signal Processing Network.

You have (or are near completion of) a PhD in speech processing, computer science, cognitive science, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline. You will have the necessary programming ability to conduct research in this area, a background in statistical modelling using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), and experience of theoretical and practical work.

A background in one or more of the following areas is also desirable: statistical parametric text-to-speech, statistical acoustic-to-articulatory inversion, or statistical speech-driven talking heads using the HMM framework; speaker adaptation using the MLLR or MAP family of techniques; familiarity with speech processing software tools including HTK, HTS; familiarity with 3D graphics software (e.g. Blender, Maya, and Poser); familiarity with motion tracking.

The starting date will be 1st March 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary Scale:  £29,972 - £35,788 per annum
