Job Description
| A postdoctoral position is available immediately to join the Molecular Virology Division at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center/Columbia University Medical Center, a unit dedicated to basic research in HIV-1 biology and AIDS. The laboratory constructed a chimeric HIV-1 which employs mouse but not human receptors for virus entry and which can productively infect conventional mice and induce protective immune responses. The model of infection of mice with chimeric HIV-1 is being used for studies on sexual transmission of HIV-1, mechanisms of viral pathogenesis, microbicide and vaccine testing. The present opening is for further research on interventions to block the sexual transmission of chimeric HIV-1 in mice including antivirals and immunization. The studies will employ construction and evaluation of new chimeric HIV-1 in tissue culture and in mice, measurement of viral and cellular gene products by state-of-the-art techniques including real-time PCR and confocal microscopy, and culture and evaluation of primary mouse cells. The requirements for the position are a doctoral degree, strong training and experience in virology, experimental experience with animals, an excellent command of English, the desire to work within a team, and willingness to experiment with infectious HIV-1. The appointment will be for a minimum of two years.
