Sea lice like the salmon louse are a major factor for economical loss in the salmon farming industry world wide. The position is affiliated with The Sea Lice Research Centre (SLRC), a new centre for research based innovation (CRI) established through Norwegian Research Council and hosted by University of Bergen. The CRI has a long term funding (5+3 years) from both the research council and the consortium partners (4 academic partners: University of Bergen, Institute of Marine Research, Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, UNI and 5 industrial partners: Novartis Animal Health, EWOS Innovation, Patogen Analyse AS, Marine Harvest ASA, Lerøy Seafood Group ASA). The research is organized in 6 different work packages.
The post-doc will play a central role in designing and implementing the LiceBase resource. LiceBase will be the system for storing and mining the data from within this and related projects and is aimed to be the preferred site for the global research community for access to genome data on sea lice. The work will involve both development and application of bioinformatics tools to facilitate data representation and analysis (e.g., genome annotation, integration of data from genome-wide functional studies), and development of a database solution with a web-based front-end. The system will build on, when appropriate, existing software. The post-doc/researcher will take active part in the implementation and also coordinate a programmer who will take part in the implementation. The successful candidate will work closely with staff at SLRC and with the Computational Biology Unit (staff of around 35).

Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian doctorate in bioinformatics or a related field, or equivalent education abroad, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.
For this position, excellent programming and technical skills is a requirement. Experience from developing and running large, complex software systems is a plus. Expertise and hands-on experience within relevant bioinformatics areas (e.g., genome annotation, analysis of high-throughput sequencing data, integrative bioinformatics) is highly desired, as is a strong theoretical foundation in computer science and knowledge within molecular biology/genomics. Excellent written and oral communication skills is a requirement.
