Job Description
An infectious disease laboratory with an emphasis on malaria research within the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute is seeking a highly independent, ambitious and creative Ph.D. level scientist with extensive experience (minimum of 2 years) in proteomics and mass spectrometry. This postdoctoral position has extensive opportunities for growth and development for academic- and industry-oriented individuals.
The primary research goal for the position is the application of advanced mass spectrometry and protein separation methods towards the study of Plasmodium parasite interaction with both the mosquito and human hosts. The individual will be directly integrated with high level programmatic decisions with the PI(s) and will be expected to participate in grant writing, manuscript preparation, team leadership and independent research project development and subsequent management. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in advanced courses (off-site) to further augment his or her molecular skill set.
This position requires expert knowledge in mass spectrometry, protein separation and characterization by chromatography and standard protein bioinformatics. General responsibilities include training of staff and fellow lab members, independently designing and performing experiments as well as contributing to the general maintenance of the wet laboratory. Major responsibilities include general oversight of mass spectrometry instrumentation in the lab including direct operation and maintenance of instruments including a LC-MALDI-TOF/TOF, LC-Q-TOF, Triple Quadrupole Mass spectrometer and a GC-MS instrument. The candidate would be the primary operator of the LC-Q-TOF systems and would be expected to assist in routine instrument maintenance. Protein separation experience including nano and fast-flow HPLC, strong cation-exchange and gel electrophoresis (1DE and 2DE) is required. Level II and III laboratory operations and a familiarity with microbial practice and procedures are preferred. A highly competitive salary and benefits package will be provided to the successful candidate.
Qualifications: PhD (a minimum of 2 years of DIRECT experience with the above approaches) or equivalent, in biotechnology, analytical chemistry, protein chemistry or a related field required. Experience in glycomic (carbohydrate) analysis is a plus. More advanced, senior level applicants (from industry or academia) are encouraged to apply.
Please send a cover letter and CV to: Dr. Rhoel R. Dinglasan, PhD, MPH (rdinglas@jhsph.edu), with the subject heading: “Proteomics Position”. Please include in your cover letter a short (1/2 page) description of your training (didactic or otherwise), the number of "hours" running a specific mass spectrometer, and your previous level of expertise in the use of protein bioinformatics software.
