A postdoctoral/Research Assistant/Technician position is available at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This position is created for a person who is interested in investigating the functions of lysosomes with a focus on lysosomal ion channels. Lysosomes are traditionally viewed as ‘cell stomachs’ (degradation through endocytosis, autophagy, phagocytosis). Recent research, however, indicates that lysosomes also play important roles in a variety of cellular functions including endo-exocytic membrane trafficking, signal transduction, gliotransmitter release, neurite outgrowth, insulin secretion, and plasma membrane repair. Lysosomal ion channels/transporters play essential roles in the aforementioned functions of lysosomes. To understand lysosomal channels/transporters in their native environments, my group recently developed a unique lysosomal patch-clamp technique (Dong XP et al. Nature, 2008, 455: 992-997; Nature Commun, 2010, 1: 38), which has opened a new avenue for the research of lysosomal ion channel and related diseases. Primary interests of my lab are lysosomal ion channels and their physiological/pathological implications. Investigation of these lysosomal channels will facilitate our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of many human diseases including neurodegenerative diseases, lysosomal storage diseases, stroke/ischemia, and aging. Competitive applicants will be motivated individuals with expertise in patch-clamp electrophysiology, and/or calcium imaging. Experience with molecular/cellular biology, confocal microscopy, and mouse genetics are additions.
