Postdoc in molecular mechanisms of aging and neurodegeneration with special focus on DNA damage, mitochondrial stress, and inflammation

Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a three-year position to commence 1. September 2020.

You are eager to study the signalling pathways that connect normal aging process to age-related neurological diseases. You will investigate candidate pathways in human cells and in materials from various laboratory animal models in collaboration with other members of the group and our external collaboration partner.

Information on the department can be found at: https://icmm.ku.dk

Our research

The overall focus of our research is on understanding the mechanisms that control age-associated decline in brain function and neurodegenerative disorders. Particularly, our research is based on a working model that nuclear and mitochondrial DNA damage and altered mitochondrial homeostasis generate signalling pathways that drive the aging process as well as the development and progression of associated diseases, especially neurodegenerative disorders.

In our work, we use different animal models and human cells in close collaboration with Danish research laboratories and international research institutes including INSERM France, Newcastle University UK, University of Oslo, and National Institute on Aging, NIH, USA, with a broad range of expertise from cell biology to bioinformatics and computer modelling of complicated biological systems. This broad collaboration network has resulted in the publication of several scientific papers in quality journals in recent years.

Your job

We are currently focused on various inflammatory responses as key signalling pathways connecting DNA damage, altered mitochondrial homeostasis, and cellular stress to neurodegeneration, which is also the focus of this project. You will be working on your own project(s) and you will be involved in projects we carry out in collaboration with our international partners.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

You have a PhD in molecular biology and biomedical sciences. You are highly experienced in cell culturing, DNA, RNA, and protein analysis techniques. You have an active interest in the biology of aging and age-associated neurodegenerative diseases Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams Excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

Knowledge and experience in mitochondrial biology, confocal microscopy, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry. Experience in handling C.elegans and/or mice. Experience in handling mouse brain tissue and primary neuronal culture. Experience/knowledge in microarray and RNA-sequencing data analysis.

Place of employment

The place of employment is at Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower.

Terms of employment

The employment as postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for three years. Starting date is 1 September 2020 or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at 34,400 DKK/ approx. 4,610 Euro (April 2020-level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of 11 December 2019.
